This 1916 painting is Anzacs bathing in the sea by Australian George Washington Lambert.
It depicts three soldiers bathing in Anzac Cove during the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign.
Lambert's father was American, hence the name, but he grew up in Australia.
Apparently this does still happen. Horses on "holiday", exercised when it is quiet at dawn.
