East German Textbook, 1982

These three photos are from page 177 of East German Professor Gottfried Bamme's 1982 textbook in anatomy for artists.  The East Germans were surprisingly easy going when it came to nudity in art or naturist clubs, but they would shoot to kill if you tried to leave the country.

  2. DDR nicht so frei.
Die Sozialdemokratische Partei in Westdeutschland zahlte Lösegelder an DDR, um die Freilassung von Menschen aus DDR zu erwirken und Familien wieder zusammenzuführen. (“)

    1. True, and then after reunification they paid huge amounts of money to upgrade the Eastern economy and clean up some nightmarish environmental situations. Parts of the old DDR still lag behind in some ways.

  3. The EAST Germans allowed nudity? I'm shocked, I always thought they were a totalitarian regime with dreadful architecture !!

    1. They were a totalitarian regime with dreadful architecture and a strong tolerance for nudilsm and nudity in art . . . as long as you didn't try to leave or speak out against the regime.
