Group photos at Prof. Desbonnet's various gyms were made often and always interesting.
Look at the close-ups below and try to tell me with a straight face that the guys in the first
one at right aren't gay. The two men in suits look like they're thinking,
"They'll have their hands in each other's pants any minute now."
And then there's these two with serious goo-goos going on.

ReplyDeleteDesbonnet was a physical culture and health pioneer, along with Louis Attila and Dr Vladislav von Krajewski. Attila opened gyms in 1886 in Brussels and in 1889 in London, then moved to NYC in 1893 and opened a gym. He trained Sandow.
Dr Krajewski founded the Athletic and Cycling Club of St Petersburg in 1885. He trained Lurich and Hackenschmidt.

ReplyDeleteIn your middle shot, look closely at the guy at left (part of the trio). His head appears disconnected from his torso, b/c there's a LINE there. Appears that someone tampered with this.
I see the line, and I also see a circle across it.
