1895 Water Polo

This is the New York Athletic Club water polo team from 1895.  (I didn't even know they played water polo in 1895, btw.)  When I first saw this, I thought they were a track and field team because of the winged feet on their suits.  Then I read the caption.  Oh, and the three men at center top are easily the best looking items from today's entire series.  The coach ain't bad, either.

  1. That is one very handsome and effective team strip. What's the betting that the πτηνοπέδῑλος (ptenopedilos) or Latin Talaria - the winged feet of Ἑρμῆς (Hermes), Roman equivalent Mercury - are in pink? I know they were supposed to have been smelt in pure gold but it was a much sought after colour at that time, particularly in the Ivy League and the British public schools. I would have been in seventh heaven if I'd had a team strip like that. The tops.

    1. Seeing as how you were a competitive runner, such an emblem would be perfect for you in almost any color.
