Unfinished?
The face and feet look unfinished, plus the top of his head is cut off,
but I still find myself lingering to look at this one at length.
Another way of looking at the drawing, like the Japanese knowing what to leave out, is asking if the drawing is complete or incomplete. This is very different to a drawing (or painting) being finished or unfinished. In this case I would say the drawing is unfinished but it's complete.
Sometimes you can be very inspired by a body, but not at all by a head, a portrait is not easy to draw without inspiration
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense.
DeleteHot bod.
ReplyDeletePerhaps the face was unfinished for the sake of the poser’s anonymity….:)
Possibly, but such nude modeling was not generally considered inappropriaate in this context.
DeleteThe head and feet don't need more.. the Japanese call it "knowing what to leave out"..
ReplyDeleteGood point.
