Lest we forget the price Doug Juleff paid for his art, here's this item from the March 18, 1955 edition of the Detroit Free Press. I have no information on how the psychiatric exam went, but he ended up doing six months in jail. That was about average for such "offenses" in those days, but the worst part was the destruction of much of his work and the ending of his career. Oh, and just to add insult to injury, his own father cooperated with the police during the raid. Don't think for a minute that there aren't people working right now to take us back to those dark days.

The current regime is the most frightening thing I have ever seen.
ReplyDeleteThe non-politician supporters are the scariest part of all.
DeleteNo explaining the tendency for certain humans to remain un-evolved and puritanical, but receiving "New Obscene" photos of the beautiful Al Walch and Stan Stanczyk is always to be celebrated! Long live Douglas of Detroit! Thanks for posting!!!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome.
DeleteThe most important post of the day; btw, "obscene" in WHOSE EYES?? Couldn't they simply leave people /photographers alone back then?? And, naturally, they had to publish his business address. What was wrong with people then?? I was born a decade after this so-called offense, and I STILL can't believe it. THANK the Universe that "common sense" prevailed by '68!
ReplyDeleteWhile Doug Juleff experienced one of the worst episodes, many others faced prosecution for distributing male nudes. Lyle Frisby, Bob Mizer, Lon Hanagan, Al Urban, and Walt Kundzicz all experienced legal harrassment and/or arrest.
DeleteThey always published addresses to shame people. When bars would be raided they would generally publish the name and address of the owner only. If the bar was gay or lesbian everyone’s name and address, owner, employees and customers, would be published for all to see.
DeleteThough some who had “connections” would be exempt….:)
La liberté exige des sacrifices.
ReplyDeleteSadly at the expense of the innocent in perversions of justice. As we see now in the criminal murders of the innocent in Minnesota by the Federal officials of the United States.
