I've heard that they (E. Germans) were miserable, so glad to see that they at least got some camaraderie, and maybe some thrills for the bi / gay miners!
Not everyone was miserable in the DDR. They had the highest standard of living in the communist bloc, good free medical care, and job security, but no political freedom. Millions voted with their feet, even at the risk of their lives.
