Memorial Day Navy, Part 1 - Shirtless Sailors

For part one of our Navy photo series, we have some shirtless navy men.
These guys are said to be from the USS Texas, a battleship which fought
in both World Wars and in the Atlantic and Pacific in the second.

  1. My grandfather served on the USS TEXAS 1924-25 and later on the INDIANAPOLIS (during the late ‘30s, I think).

  2. My grandfather served in the USN, part of the Yangtze Patrol in China 1927-1934. On occassion they found themselves fighting bandits and apprehending opium runners, most times it was boring duty.
One time in the 1930’s he met a Chinese war lord.
Grandfather thought of a fierce samurai type with oriental armor, a sword and riding a horse. Instead the war lord was dressed in a well tailored suit with cane, spats, silk tie, white gloves and a top hat. And the war lord was driven around in a Cadillac limo….:)

    1. Great story. I've seen movie portrayals of war lords from that era, and they were shown much as your grandfather described.
