Duality
My source says that these two photos were meant to be seen as a single work of art. George Platt Lynes did this a number of times, sometimes with two images and sometimes with three.
Tout repose sur l’éclairage et les ombres. Of the chiaroscuro style, a style popular with German expressionist cinéma and American film noir. Said to be invented by the Italiens, but actually a lighting méthode of the ignored early British cinéma.
Like a lot of great artists, his true talent wasn't recognized until after his death, despite having been in demand for fashion and portrait photography during his lifetime.
