The Isle of Capri in 1955 was the setting for this List image.

  1. I am most interested to note the high rise bikini trunks in Italy from 1955, which are the absolute opposite of what was deemed acceptable in the conservative 1950s in the Anglosphere. I don't know what the young Italian man-about-town was wearing under his trousers at the time, but this contrasts with the Nylon stretch bikini underwear increasingly popular in America and Britain - where anything sexy was still a very private matter. Not that I imagine Eisenhower ever sent Anthony Eden a pair of Jockey Skants for Christmas, the tag marked "Love, Dwight".

    1. What you say is true. While I was researching the recent series featuring promotional material from 50's physique magazines, I noticed some underwear and swimwear ads which were slipped in among those for the photo studios. The contrast you mention was quite evident. Hmmmm . . . maybe I should do an underwear/swimwear ad series sometime.

  2. I would appreciate that very much. What never ceases to fascinate, is that so many schools, the Y and municipal swimming baths at the time insisted on males swimming naked.
