This is a 1933 study by Pyotr Konchalovsky,
a Soviet artist whose work I have posted before.

Konchalovsky 1931

I gave Pyotr Konchalovsky his own series a while back,
but I failed to include this attractive early 1930s work.

Russia Day, Part 2 - the Art of Pyotr Konchalovsky

Pyotr Konchalovsky (1876-1956) was an important painter under both the Czarist Russian and Soviet regimes.  He somehow managed to avoid the political purges of the Stalin era and had his art approvingly displayed and taught in institutes throughout his life.  I'm starting with a bit of a cheat in that this first piece is by Konchalovsky's friend Ilya Mashkov.  It is a self portrait of Ilya at left with a burly Konchalovsky at right.  This might be from a visit to Spain which would account for the toreador sheet music and the near nudity.  It gets very hot in Spain.

This 1933 work is labeled "Study" on several reputable art websites.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a larger or more complete work based on it.

1930 was the date for Konchalovsky's "The Golden Age."

"The Bathing of the Red Cavalry" was approved by the Soviet authorities and is sometimes cited as an example of the Soviet Realism style.  To my untrained eye, I see both Impressionist and Expressionist influences at work, buat it's very good regardless of genre labels.

Konchalovsky painted "Students in the Studio" in 1932.

Despite the fact that the man is standing, Konchalovsky titled this "Sitter."
