Konchalovsky

This is a 1933 study by Pyotr Konchalovsky,
a Soviet artist whose work I have posted before.

  1. I'm familiar with "Soviet Realism," but it surprised me that it extended to frontals. Or did it?

    1. Frontal male nudity would have been quite rare in Socialist Realism, but not completely unheard of. Probably depended on the whim of whoever was running the Culture Ministry at the time. And this painting doesn't fully conform to the genre anyway, having impressionist/expressionist influences.

  2. I find this utterly charming. Somehow Konchalovsky captures that feeling of sheer expanse that is ever-present in all things Russian whilst remaining intimate.
