James E. Davis Photo Day

Today we look at ten different models photographed by James E. Davis.  (For biographical info, click on the label of his name below or in the column at right.)  We start with the only unidentified model in the set, a fellow in a belted 1940s bathing suit riding a bicycle.

 

Bike Day, Part 1 - Penny Farthings

Today we have a bicycling double feature plus an intermission.  Part one is a set of those late 19th C. wonders, the penny farthing bike.  Named after two radically different sized British coins, they became a fad that time stamped an era.  As an added bonus, our P/F riders all have mustaches.

We start the show with a guy who must have been good at it.  Look at those medals.

 

Trio

There's a lot to like here with three handsome men, guys actually atop their penny farthings, 

mustaches all the way round, and a guy in what appears to be black tights.

 

Lean

Here's one for those of you who like your mustachioed men on the lean side.

I think the "biggest ride" caption has to do with wheel size.

 

Oddity

Although strictly speaking, this is not a bicycle, it is a penny farthing type.

I include it because it's odd . . . and the operator has a great mustache.

 

Oh, my.

Our last penny farthing cyclist is quite the looker,

and he even has a leg cocked.

 

Intermission - Semi-nudes

A penny farthing cyclist was induced to pose nude, but we don't get to see the full package.

Bike Day, Part 2 - Nudes

We kick off part two with a Robert Giard photo of a bicyclist with tan lines.

It seems to be from 1976 or 77, and somehow I only just discovered this photographer.

Expect to see more of his excellent work here in the future.

These fellows seem to be making repairs to a bike . . . in the nude.

I have no provenance for this motion study of a man and his bicycle.

All the info that I attached to this one was "122" which might be a file number.

I love the little kid's bell on the bicycle's handlebars.

 

Penny-farthing

Ken Suffolk had several dozen photos of men with penny-farthing bicycles.  For some reason, 

I chose to add those to my collection while passing on circus clowns, biscuit tins, hot air balloons, 

and a dozen other vintage G-rated subjects.  Always helpful, Miss Magnolia Thunderpussy felt compelled to point out that this man in a bowler hat appeared to be humping his bike.

Today's theme is cycling, and we start with this "forward" guy.

 

This guy seems to be answering the call of nature while cycling nude across a pasture.
