Time for a full series on the team sport most likely to result in nudity, rugby.

For some reason ruggers will drop their pants almost anytime, anywhere.

 

San Diego State I

The San Diego State University rugby team appeared in a memorable 1970s Playgirl spread.

We'll see another view of the team later in today's series.

 

Rugby in the Rough

My source called this one "Rugby in the Rough."  Looks like they were playing 

in a cow pasture, so I hope they didn't end up playing hockey instead.

 

Known for this

My source said, "Rugby players are known for this."

I won't argue with that or complain.

One of the players here seems to be slapping himself on the bum.

Although my source says this is from 1981, I have my doubts.

San Diego State II

Here are the San Diego State guys again.  This time they are dropping their shorts 

in the bleachers.  The Playgirl spread was in February of 1974, and I saved 

the issue for many years because of these guys.

 

Skinny

Our closing rugby photo is a trio that looks too skinny to be rugby players.

Maybe they were beginners.

 

Cleo Scrum

The Australian version of Playgirl, Cleo, published this naked rugby scrum in the 70s.

 

More Ruggers

Here we have some English rugby players.  I have to rate rugby players 

as the athletes most likely to pose nude . . . by far.

 

Basingstoke

This cheeky team is a Basingstoke, England rugby outfit.  I passed through Basingstoke once, 

and I felt like I had been transported to a modern suburb of Kansas City.

 

George Peponis

This is Australian rugby player George Peponis from 1982.

 

French Ruggers

These three are French rugby league players Gèrard Cholley, 

Alain Paco, and Robert Paparemborde from the late 1970s.

Mr. Cholley looks like he had a rough game.

 

Gym Shorts Day

It's gym shorts day, and no, our first photo is not the 1978 bar backs from the Marlin Beach Hotel in Fort Lauderdale.  They are rugby players Billy Smith, Graeme Langlands, and Henry Tatana.  

 

Lance Kendrick

It was 1965 when Dave Martin photographed Lance Kendrick, a football, 

rugby, and baseball star at Menlo College in Atherton, California.

This is a 1979 Australian Rugby League medical exam.

I got this in the Sack of Tumblr, and it had no info attached.  Google Images came through this time, however, and I learned that this is retired English rugby player and activist Ben Cohen.

 

Penrith Panthers

This is the Penrith Panthers rugby team from Australia several decades ago.

They are still a going concern with a big fan base.
