Edward Hopper

Edward Hopper (1882-1967) was one of the most highly acclaimed American artists of his time, 

and today we will look at some of his male nude sketches, paintings, and studies.  That's a self 

portrait above, and below we  have one of his better known works, 1942's Nighthawks.

 

Mustache

I love the model's mustache in this one, and is that 

an exclamation point or a smudge at upper right?

 

Interesting

The model's bottom is half on and half off the chair in this interesting drawing.

 

Multiples

Mr. Hopper did multiple drawings of the model's hands and feet for this study,

something that I've seen only a few times before from other artists.

 

Academic?

Although my source did not say so, I think this oil painting may be an academic work.

 

Older Model

Here we see what I believe are two drawings of the same older 

bearded model from both the front and rear directions.

 

Rough

Although rough looking at first glance, there are some anatomical details in this drawing.

 

Staff

Mr. Hopper carefully shaded this study of a young man with a staff.

 

Painting II

I think this is another academic oil painting.

 

Characters?

Our closing drawing shows a side view of a man with his hands clasped.

That vertical row of marks at right looks like Japanese characters, 

but my Japanese friend says he can't read them.
