Yes, people do celebrate New Years on the beach here in Hawaii. These guys, however, are German naturists, or nudists to most Americans.
Either you have posted this image in the past or I have seen it before, but I like seeing it again. As I have said before, one of my favorite elements in such vintage images is seeing a bunch of guys who seem to be having a great time. These guys seem genuinely, really freaking happy.
You have a good memory! I posted this several years ago on tumblr as part of a beach series. I agree with you about both seeing it again and the really happy look of the men.
