Thomas Eakins, Part 1 - Male Nudes

Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) was a painter, photographer, educator, and social pioneer.  He scandalized 1880's Philadelphia society by taking a European approach to nudity, nude modeling,
and art.  He was also gay, something he had to hide at the time from all but his closest friends.
It wasn't until the 1980's that letters were found which established his sexuality once and for all.
So today it Thomas Eakins day on the blog, and we start with his photo of his lover
and decades long companion, Sam Murray.  Those letters I mentioned were about his love for Sam.
