I don't know what, other than body paint, could have produced this bronzed and oiled look.
Did they even have body paint in the 1930's? If they did, it probably wasn't safe.
Yes, they did have body paint in the 30's. The Wizard of Oz originally had Buddy Ebsen playing the Tin Man, but he had a severe allergic reaction to the aluminum-based body paint and was replaced by actor Jack Haley. Also, from the 30's Springfield College in Mass. (which specializes in Phys Ed) has an annual tableaux show where the students ware gold body paint.
