Is coal dust so fine and permeating that it could coat the skin even through clothes?
Unless he worked nude, that would appear to be the case with the man at right.

  1. Many miners actually did work nude. Nudity, or wearing just an apron, was common in hotter mines, or to save time cleaning the dust.

Obviously modern mining is much more automated, just because mines are such inherently dangerous places.

    1. Some miners did indeed work nude. There is even a well known series of photographs of nude Italian sulfur miners. It was not nearly as common in Western Europe, which is where I think this photo was made.
