This photo has a sad story related to it, as it was made not long before the Selk'nam peoples of Tierra del Fuego were subjected to persecution that some have compared to genocide. Although recognized descendants remain, the tribes are no longer cohesive cultures. This photo shows the early stage of a ritual that involved painting the entire bodies of the male tribe members.
