This is another personal favorite Von Gloeden portrait. The partially unbuttoned shirt gives us a glimpse of chest hair and accentuates the two medallions, presumably religious. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the man is what my cousin Sharon would call "drop dead handsome."
Yes, this is a fantastic portrait. What singles it out - for me - is the subjects clothes. I cannot even imagine a Frenchman wearing an outfit like that at the time. The Italians just simply intuitively know how to dress - and get away with it.
ReplyDeleteThree things strike me about his clothing, aside from the lovely collar area. They are the texture of the shirt fabric, that dotted print, and what appears to be either a collared vest or a suit jacket with the sleeves removed. And like you say, he makes it all work.
