Sylvan

This sylvan little scene is from a set of about four photos from the same session.

  1. In silva... In the woods... The first words of my first Latin primer, the first paragraph of which gave every permutation of vowel and consonant to cover the pronunciation of Latin. It didn't make much sense as text but it worked well enough. We were taught in the Reconstructed Classical Pronunciation as opposed to the Vulgate, Ecclesiastical or English Method. All "Cs" were hard, so it was Kikero, not Sisero, all "Vs" were pronounced as an English "W" and the "J" reverted to an "I" and an ae was rendered as "I" or "eye". So, when Iulius K-eye-ssar said "I came, I saw, I conquered" he pronounced it, Weni, Widi, Wici. In silwa... If you go down to the woods today, you're in for a big surprise...

    1. I never studied Latin, but my Classical Civilization professors both used the pronunciation guide you were taught. Only one bothered to explain why so many of the names and objects he mentioned sounded funny to many of us.

    1. Not sure. It does look a lot like him, but the photos I've seen of him as a youth show a more slender waist. Google Images searches usually ID pictures by or of Lynes, but not this one. GI is far from perfect, though.

  3. Ahh....those photographers had such a wonderful profession. I would think that they would want to know their models on a more personal level. If they didn’t actually get results along those lines, still, getting to see those beautiful naked men would have been a nice consolation prize!

    1. The level of photographer interaction with models ran a wide range. We don't have much personal information on any of them from before about 1935. What little we do have from before then indicates a pretty much business transaction model. "I pay you, and you pose as I direct." There were exceptions, though, as when Tony Sansone became friends with Edwin Townsend after posing for him multiple times in the 1920s. By all accounts, that relationship was platonic. When the modern physique photography era hit after 1935, the photographers came to know their models much better. Lon Hanagan and Bruce Bellas both had well documented love affairs with models. Pat Milo literally had a "hands on" approach on occasion, that appears to have been mostly playful. Some of Bob Mizer's models at AMG literally lived on his premises. Don Whitman of Western Photography Guild was a true gentleman who cared about his models, helped them with their bodybuilding careers, paid them well and promptly, and never expected sexual favors. When Mr. Whitman passed away, a dozen or more of his models attended his funeral, several with their wives.
