Those sneakers
The weight lifting is impressive, as is the man and the
gym shorts, but I've gone goofy for those sneakers.
1960s shorts. The split leg running short was introduced at this time. Please note the gym shoes - known by various names: pumps, daps, plimsolls - but which had rubber soles, necessary for the wood flooring. And what flooring it was - sprung floorboards. I used to bounce off my school gym floor. They don't make gym floors like that any more. The past had some advantages...
I had the same PE teacher (a true jerk if ever there was one) from grade six through eight. He was insane about the gym floor and would inspect our sneakers to make sure we hadn't worn them outdoors and gotten little rocks embedded in the rubber soles. If your shoes didn't pass muster, you had to play barefoot in the gym.
This is Gary Player, a professional American golfer. This pic would have been from somewhere around 1960, when he was in his mid-to-late 20s. So Calorman's dating is spot on.
Sure looks like a young Peter Lawford

ReplyDeleteThanks! I have some other photos of Mr. Player where he is named, and it is indeed the same fellow.
