Another Hank
Our last Lyle Frisby photo and second Hank of the day is Hank Prater in a pose
that came straight out of World War II pinup photos of young women.
Hank Prater and Hank Evans are the same model. Apollo called him Prater. One of the first models to go full nude in the 50s, including showing an erection.
Yes, a pin-up pose indeed... and very much a provocation to the authorities of the time because it was so blatant. Lyle Frisby was most definitely thumbing his nose at the prudes, which is possibly why he paid so appalling a price. We must be grateful he did because each time someone did so, the more they were undermined, however imperceptibly.
Pat Milo and Lyle Frisby were in business together, with Lyle doing the photography and Pat managing sales, bookkeeping, etc. There are some accounts which say that they were also lovers, but I'm not certain about that. While Lyle was incarcerated, Pat took photography classes and kept the business going. I can see Lyle's influence in Pat Milo's work, but it eventually moved to a whole new level of excellence.
Now that I didn't know and it explains a lot - the use of the column and also a less stark monochrome resolution on a material level and the understanding that less being more can be as erotic as full nudity and can be a fundamental provocation on an ideological level. They weren't just talented artists, they were thinking men of their age.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the information, James!
