Early 19th C.

I'm guessing that this is early 19th Century based on the style and the model's hair.

  1. This artist was not good at sketching hands and feet, which seem to be enormous and vastly out of proportion to the rest of him outside the demands of perspective. I once met a barrister who was an unabashed crashing snob. He came from Sevenoaks in Kent, which explains a lot because no one is someone in Sevenoaks if they had to buy their own silver (rather than inheriting it). He came out with the most preposterous remarks, such as "He's not quite middle class" and "Take no notice of her, I can remember when her mother used to take in lodgers". The best of all was "Have you seen the size of their hands? A generation away from the fields," implying that they were descended from farm labourers. Perhaps our model is a little rustic.

    1. Well, it wouldn't surprise me. His right foot may be resting on a bag of grain.

  2. That lean would be a killer. Perhaps additional support for his rear removed? Is he leaning on something too. All a bit odd.
