Henri Deglane

Wrestler Henri Deglane was the 1924 Greco-Roman gold medal winner at the Olympics.
He was also awarded a controversial American pro title in the 1930s that is still disputed.

  1. That would be the Greco-Roman wrestling. The Olympic movement at the time had both Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling. Henri Deglane was a heavyweight. Interestingly, the Finns dominated the Greco-Roman wrestling, followed closely by the Swedes and Estonians. The first Olympiad of the modern era in 1896 very heavily promoted wrestling as it was the cornerstone of the ancient Olympic Games as part of the Pentathlon (708BCE).

    1. Bear and I got tickets for the Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. It was over shadowed by the freestyle type, but was still well attended. The Atlanta games gave all the athletes an email address, and one could contact them via a website. We were quite taken with a Canadian competitor named Herbinder Singh "Yogi" Johl, so we sent him a note. Somewhat to our surprise, he replied and we corresponded with him for years. Really nice guy!
