At the Y, 1936
Our last skinny dipping item features the instuctors for the Bloomington, Illinois YMCA lifesaving class of 1936. It must have been fun to have at least two instuctors join in nude.
The one piece leotard is right on the money for 1936 - and is quite a fashion statement. Here we see the gradual breakdown of the top of a bathing one-piece until it is finally discarded by the 1940s. As usual, the provinces of a country would lag behind the major cities but that qualification is a moot point in countries as vast as America with its local centres. When my late brother moved to Canada in the early 1980s, he said that a 40 minute drive outside Toronto or Montreal and you went back 40 years in terms of mores and public morality. By this time, Western European countries such as France and Germany would have been wearing trunks.
I never saw anyone at the Y wearing trunks. And in our high school and college swim classes, the instructors were stripped most of the time.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to see the one in trunks.

ReplyDeleteI think it's still that way in a lot of places.
