This last William Etty work is another that is a bit puzzling. There is a staff clearly visible,
but there is also an implied archery motif in the model's position. Regardless of that,
we once again see the painter's great ability to show a fine back and derriere.
As ever, just my opinion. This is a sketch. It would be impossible for the model to hold an archer pose for a long time. I suspect Etty, and the model, realised that both arms would be in the same position as an archer, if the left hand was suspended from a rope. And the right hand on a supporting staff. Perhaps?
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense, thank you.
DeleteIt has been said his male nudes seemed to be too fleshy. Fine with me, I find his work to be excellent in shape and form. Thanks for this one Jerry.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Pat, and I like the size of the models.
