German artist Willi Geiger painted Spartacus in 1940, but because of his anti-Nazi politics it wasn't exhibited until after the war. Herr Geiger was fired from his job as an art professor shortly after the Nazis took power, but he laid low, survived the war, and made a comeback in 1946.
I really like this one! Big Dude
ReplyDeleteI have not seen this before, I am more familiar with his illustrations that I have collected. His style was very unique in whatever he did.
ReplyDeleteTrue about his style. This would have been far more palatable to the Nazis than his earlier pieces would have been, yet it didn't get shown until after the war. I guess his reputation was the factor.
Happy to know this.
