1908

The signature on this one seems partly cut off, but the year, 1908, is clear.

  1. The proportions on this model seem perfect but the artist seems to neglect details on the feet and hands. This is my fav.

    1. I agree. The artist put all his effort into the parts with the most immediate impact.

  2. I like it a lot. The model is handsome, and despite the lack of detail mentioned by Vintage Viking, it calls to mind some physique photos.

  4. The artist's name is Emil Alexay-Olexák. Born in Volovec, Hungary, in 1891, and died in Newark NJ, in 1949 (that Newark air will do it every time - I can say that as a NJ native).

His gifts as an artist were evident very early in his life. He entered an Art School in Budapest at age 14, and completed the program there at age 18. His work focused on portraiture and landscapes. At age 19, he was hired by a Greek Catholic Church (I believe in or near Budapest) to do the entire church's iconography. In 1920, he and his brother moved to Newark NJ, where he continued working as an artist until his death at age 58. He left behind his wife and a daughter.

More of his sketches and some art work can be found at https://artvee.com/artist/emil-alexay-olexak/page/1/.
