Ledo Road

Here's another Bernard Hoffman photo of a chubby truck washer on the Ledo Road in Burma.

  1. China-India-Burma, is one of the most overlooked theaters of WW2.
The Ledo Road aka Stilwell Road was a much needed supply line as the Burma Road had been taken by the Japanese. The 1000 mile road was an achievement of road engineering, given the rough and difficult terrain. Built by America’s Army Corps of Engineers, to relieve the British and Chinese of building the road, so they could fight the Japanese in Burma. After the war the road fell into disrepair and was gradually swallowed up by thick jungle growth, today efforts are underway to restore it as a much needed road.

    1. I have visited Myanmar, aka Burma, twice. Not a pleasant experience either time, although there were some nice people. It has been a mess for decades, and the current civil war will make restoring that road very difficult. Do they need it? Of course they do. Can they fix it? I doubt it.

  2. Thank you for the return of this chubby emperor. This is one of my favorite photos. You're tops in my book, Jerry.
