Sudanese Man

This is Sudanese Man by French sculptor Charles Cordier from 1856.
You really have to be there in person to appreciate the fine details
in everything from the skin tone to the folds of his clothing.
Several types of stone were used to incredible effect.

  1. Cordier, sculptuer conscient de la beauté de toutes les races.
This is a bust of Saïd Abdullah of Sudan, so fine in detail in fine stones and bronze. Cordier was forward thinking in the realm of race at a time of institutional racism. His intense interest in anthropology and ethnography was expressed through his sculptures.
