Most academic art pieces were drawing in either pencil, ink, or charcoal, but some were done as color paintings. This 1880 work by Thomas Wilson is the first of two examples in today's series.
So many male nudes of this era are illuminated by a pool of light from above. Isolating the figure and enhancing the musculature. Having tried the pose myself...You can see the right foot is slightly turning away to the right to stabilise the awkward right arm position. Also he is repeatedly clenching his left hand bringing out the veins in the forearm. Lovely, thank you for posting..
