That's J. Laurie Wallace again at right in another photo
made by Eakins on an outing to a wooded area.

  1. The guy on the left looks very much like the guy on the left in the boxing photo with Wallace. Maybe done on the same session? I love his build. Rail thin, lanky, but naturally muscular and hairy. Plus, great moustache. Very sexy fellow.

    1. I think you're right about that being the same guy as in the other picture. And yes, he has a great moustache.

  2. I found several other photos of this pair, along with some other naked young men, in this wooded area, all dated 1883. While John Laurie Wallace is always named, the others never get more than "Male Nude" as a name!

    1. Yes, it's hit and miss on the names with most of Eakins' student models. It's the same for both the outdoor groups and studio photos. Even well curated museum collections of Eakins' photos are like this. It's only speculation, but I think that perhaps a lot of the names were added later by people who knew them and not all were still known by that point in time.
