Whatever happened to Joe Tiffenbach? - Part 1, the Early Years

Today is the first of what will be an occasional series focusing on the off camera lives of some classic era physique models before, during, and after their careers in front of the camera.

Joe Tiffenbach (1923-1992) was born into a middle class family in Los Angeles with an insurance salesman father and a homemaker mother.  He is probably best known to viewers of this blog as a physique model who worked for Ralph Kelly and Bruce of LA in the early to mid-1950's.  As you will see, Joe went on to work in the movie and TV industry as well as being a photographer of male nudes himself and a producer, director, and writer of gay porn movies.  The above photo was made by Bruce of LA and is the only color shot I have of Joe as a physique model.
Editor's note:  I am running this as a single series rather than the usual Wednesday double feature mainly for the sake of continuity.

  1. I like the black and white fully nude version better... :)

  2. Jerry, I didn't know you could do anything to make me like your blog more. But you have. This series provides us with a wonderful narrative of Joe's life. Your research and captions bring Joe's still pictures to life. Many thanks!

  3. Wow, this wonderful overview is more than I expected. You have done an excellent job on this. Thank you.

  4. I'm sorry I cant make the copy and paste work on this but a google search "Joe Tiffenbach uncircumcised" brought up a number of interesting sites including this one which refers to Joe having the aka "Lou Alton" which I did not know - search>Drummer - "Gay San Francisco: Eyewitness Drummer - Jack Fritscher" for an article in pdf format

    1. Thanks for the link! I was able to make it work through my editing software, but others will need to cut and paste it. I knew about the Lou Alton pseudonym, but forgot to get it into any of the captions.

  5. Thanks for the nice comments, guys! This was a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. Glad y'all enjoyed it.
