It's a well known fact that John Barrington's photo quality was hit and miss . . .
mostly miss according to most observers. While he did have some shining moments,
I can't argue with that assessment overall. This picture of Ken Livermore has streaks,
splotches, and spots galore. Ken looks good despite it all, though.

ReplyDeletePart of that hit-and-miss might well have been as a result of the poor quality of paper in the post-war years. Rationing, including paper, lasted until 1954 and thereafter, it took until the late 1960s for books and magazines to have what might be called an "international" standard. Books turned yellow in only months as a result of the acid. Taking one look at that print simply confirms that it is the genuine article for its time!
ReplyDeleteWhile what you say is certainly true, Barrington's work from the late 60s pretty much looks like this, too. Several contemporaries in the UK produced better quality prints, and some who knew Barrington even commented on his slapdash methods.
