The Sublime - 19th Century Academic Lookalikes

The art academies of the 19th Century unknowingly provided a treasure trove of material for 21st Century bloggers and aficionados of male nude art by requiring all their students to draw and/or paint men nude as part of their training.  Some time ago I noticed that more than a few of these survive  were done by artists who must have sat next to or near each other in class.  I even posted a few earlier.  Today we'll take a closer look at some of these.  Here's what a class looked like:

  1. The Tonists? After the drawing sessions, did some or all of them blow on the flute?

  2. Eakins invited lady students into his life-drawing classes with male subjects - that created a few scandals, I think!

    1. Absolutely true about Eakins! He eventually lost his job and founded his own academy.

  3. Lovely Jerry. Many thanks for posting these.
