If Gebbe's and Lon of New York's work sometimes seem similar, there's
a reason. The two knew and influenced each other. They would even hang out
together as above. Lon Hanagan is at left and Richard Gebhardt is at right.
I heard to great amusement that Americans had taken to calling lavatories "comfort stations" but I never took it seriously until today. Is that for real? We are very familiar with "bathroom" and also "rest room" as euphemisms - someone I know travelled across America by car and at service station diligently asked for the "rest room" to be taken to a room with a bed in it. Sometimes, you just can't win. I have an Anglo-Scottish friend who is a really rather grand antiques dealer in Kensington. She is often very loud and genuinely shocks people by referring to it as the "cludgie" which is really scraping the bottom of the social barrel in Glasgow. It seems to be a combination of "closet" and "lodge" with the Scottish "ie" diminutive which implies an outside lavatory. Well, "comfort station" it is. You've made my day!
Yes, it's for real and still around, but one sees it less these days. Scots is a Germanic language distinct from English according to most linguists, and it is much more widely spoken than Gaelic, but diminishing in most places to just being corner of the slang vocabulary. Too bad, that.
