Oscar and Bosey

Here we have the notorious (as well as brilliant and tragic) Oscar Wilde and his lover
Lord Alfred Bruce "Bosey" Douglas.  Bosey was the son of the Marquess of Queensberry
of boxing regulation fame.  Their tempestuous relationship and legal issues are legendary.

  1. It was Bosey who was essentially responsible for Wilde's downfall. Despite his colossal mind, like many in the arts, Wilde was extremely naive about human relationships. It is generally accepted that he was dragged into a dysfunctional family - Bosey's brother shot himself - and that Bosey himself was a victim of a tyrannical paterfamilias. That, however, is not the whole truth. Bosey converted in 1911 to a then very reactionary Roman Catholicism, wrote Church approved and published antisemitic articles and later, imported and translated the magazine Ostara which was a German nationalist magazine founded in 1905 by the occultist Lanz von Liebenfels in Vienna, Austria, which greatly influenced Nazi ideology. He went to ground in the late 1930s and avoiding internment, died in1945. There was a very dark side indeed to this effete aristocrat and Oscar Wilde's nemesis. Oscar Wilde rests in Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris, but was first interned with Robbie Ross, his first lover and literary executor. Ross was the son of the Speaker and later President of the Legislative Council of Upper Canada, of whom Wilde was later to quip, "Upper Canada... or is it Lower Canada? The British take their class system wherever they go..." Oscar Wilde did not deserve Lord Alfred Douglas.

-austriche

    1. Sometimes people forget that Hitler was born an Austrian and was heavily influenced by his time in the Vienna of Liebenfels.
