Clifford Clyburn

Major Clifford Clyburn was the highest ranking National Guard officer from my home town in the years leading up to World War II.  He was an engineer for the highway department, and a highly regarded professional.  My uncle didn't know him very well, but thought the world of him, saying, "He wasn't one of those 'stay in the rear' officers.  He was in the thick of it."  Maj. Clyburn's bravery caused him to be posthumously awarded the Siver Star and Purple Heart after being killed on the Franco-German border in late November of 1944 while leading his men against fortified positions.
