Scumbeast handball

Mr. Scumbeast gave me this picture of a naked handball player, and he called it
"Male Nude with Pumps."  I suppose that was a reference to the shoes.

  1. I was in college, and did not feel like participating in handball. So I "forgot" my gear. The instructor said tough shit, play in my street clothes. If I didn't want to get those sweaty, play naked. I called his bluff and did just that. Back then gym classes were not mixed. I took a lot of good-natured shit from him and my classmates. The next class, as a joke, about a dozen other guys did the same. The instructor laughed about it for the rest of. The year. By the way, our swimming classes there, and in high school, were all naked.

  2. Yes, "pumps" constitute anything from deck shoes to running shoes, to qualify they must be soft soled. As with many words until very recently in British English, usage is regional, with "plimsolls" and "daps" and more recently "trainers". In the West Country, "dap" has become verbal, as in "I dapped down to the shops". I wonder if Mr Scumbeast was from the Midlands - meaning the ancient kingdom of Mercia - because "pumps" is very much a Middle England usage. I have a lot of West Country vocabulary and usage and in a Linguistics survey, I discovered that my English is in fact closest in terms of vocabulary to Rhode Island.

    1. Very good, Julian! You never cease to amaze me. Mr. Scumbeast was originally from Wolverhampton.

  3. This guy did a series of photos. Some sites gave his name. I wrote it down and put it in a safe place where I naturally lost it. Anyone have ideas what his name is?

    3. There is a resemblance, but he doesn't exactly match the pictures of Mr. Baker in my files.
