Yale

Our final sporting type is the Yale U. swim coach from around 1950.
I believe the photo is from the LIFE Archive.

  1. That surprises me not. In common with most Ivy League institutions, nudity was a given for the rowing and swimming teams. (You got a free pass for diving, just in case you belly flopped and the family jewels hit the water first.) It's not a question of him having forgotten to put his trunks on, it's more a question of him having forgotten to take his top off.

  2. I have his name as Bob Kiphuth (swimming coach) and dated 1937.And yes, I have another shot of him where the Life logo appears.

  3. In the 1970s, I did a series of interviews with the college swim coach (I was a journalism major). He was a most definite hottie. Although he didn't do nude, I interviewed him each time while he was wearing a super-tiny speedo. Semi-sheer with crack and pubes galore. Concentration on my interview wasn't easy, but I returned for as many follow-ups as I dared.

  4. Seems that LIFE photographers took a lot of pix that they knew would never be in the mag, maybe for their private enjoyment? There was a National Geographic photographer (don't recall name) who always had at least one shirtless young working man or farmer in the story he was illustrating. -Dee Exx

    1. I don't have the reference at hand, but some other blogger actually researched this topic. When frontal nude photos were taken, the men were generally told that those shots would be cropped if they were used. The blogger actually located and posted examples of this, including the original pics, the published versions, and the markup work delineating the crops. It was fascinating. What the subjects weren't told was that the full nude versions would go into an archive that no one knew would be on a thing called the internet 60 years later.

  5. I was aware that there was no modesty among the team members themselves, but it's surprising to see the coach "letting it all hang out". Oh, if only my 2 hunky high school gym coaches had gotten naked with the rest of us...

    1. Our high school gym teachers routinely showered with us if it was the class just before lunch or the last of the day. I lucked out one term and got to shower with a particularly good looking coach daily.

    2. Same here. All my high school PE teachers and my cross-country coach showered with us. They were very well-hung, so I thought guys cocks grew with age. Hah.

  6. Most of the time our high school swimming teacher bared it. I don't think the college teacher even owned swimming trunks. He DID have a jockstrap in which he often strutted about the gym and locker room. He must have swung a good 8 1/2 uncircumcised inches.

    1. My high school didn't even have a pool, but the PE teachers were not at all bashful about getting nude in the locker room.

  7. If my high school gym teacher Mr. Gargarello had done this I would have been beside myself! No one was comfortable being nude after gym and took great pains to not to reveal anything. I chalk it up to being a Catholic boys school!

    1. My rural school started gang showers in sixth grade, and we all thought it was completely ordinary. I can only remember one time where someone was put off by it, and that was a kid who transferred in at midterm from, you guessed it, a Catholic school.

    2. I knew a lot of guys at the Catholic high school, and they were not even slightly shy. We swam naked at the Y, and they never seemed to care.
