Chuck Howard and an Arrow

Chuck Howard always made an interesting subject, even when he wasn't posing with Ted Starkowski.  Here we see him with an arrow, a square signet ring, and what may be a little hat.

  1. That seems to be a Robin Hood hat - which would explain the arrow.

    1. I think those hats were a trend around 1940 . . . among women. This one does look a bit different, though. A theatrical prop?

    2. Well, The Adventures of Robin Hood (Warner Bros, Michael Curtiz, starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone & Claude Rains) was released in 1938 and was very popular - as has every other Robin Hood film, so deeply is the story rooted in the cultures of the English-speaking peoples. This job is a little small, so I imagine it's from a child's Robin Hood costume.

    3. Now that you've sorted out the hat thing (thank you) for us, I just noticed the interesting way Mr. Howard's arms cross while holding the arrow. Lynes never ceases to amaze!
