Our last Von Gloeden image of the day is a mountaintop shot that has become iconic in a way.
Several other photographers, including Riebicke, have done their own version of this one.

  2. When I saw this pic, Hippolyte Flandrin was also my first thought -- perhaps an "iconic" homage to the artist. As for this particular photo, I have it dated at somewhere circa 1902, and von Gloeden named it "Caino" (that is, Cain). I don't see any connection between this picture and the bibical Cain -- perhaps it was the young boy's real name?

    1. I have some works by Flandrin in my file, but not the one which inspired this photo and others. The biblical Cain was banished to the wilderness, and perhaps this photo depicts that. Being a murder, it's unlikely that someone would name their son after him.

    2. Flandrin's painting dates to 1835-1836. Here is a link (one of many) to his "Young Male Nude Seated Beside the Sea":

I have always found this painting mesmerizing.

    3. Thank you, 2W! That has to be the inspiration for all those photos. It seems most of the photographers took it from the seaside to a mountaintop, but then again, there are seaside mountains.
