Studio

OK, this one is nowhere near the water, but I like it, so here he is.

  1. Wow. What a wasp. From the hair, I would date this to the 1910s. Of note are the trunks. These would doubtless be of wool but it is perhaps significant that he wears no top with them. That could imply that they are not bathers at all, but worn for indoor games in a gym. That was quite common and by the 1920s and '30s, these became quite brief and some would qualify today as "micro bikinis". I get the feeling that this is some sort of commemorative study, recording a champion of something. Also note the props... We have the photographer's backdrop, usual for the time, but the subject is standing next to a wall featuring a freeze of decidedly Classical style, evocative of the Ancient world which very much fits the Zeitgeist of the time with the revival of the Olympics and the influence of the Victorian Classical Revival. One last observation: his pectoral muscles are far less developed than would be the case by mid-century and today. Very much the alpha male of yesteryear and no mistake.
