Aussie Bears
We mustn't forget that the Australians were in Vietnam, too,
Another Navy story: We parked next to an Aussie ship in 1972. We all wore our dungarees and were fully dressed. They Aussies? Their uniforms were the tiniest bikinis you could imagine. Nearly all were crack-baring. Damn!!! You could tell who was gay on our ship — all staring at the Aussies and/or taking pictures of them. One was a homophobe who had been giving me a hard time. He saw me looking at him, and snapped something and took off. Proves that old adage.
An Aussie Navy magazine found its way onto our ship. In the back were ads for various g-strings. Shit. I should have defected to the Aussie Navy.
The Australians had been adept at dealing with communist insurgencies for the British Commonwealth in Burma, Malaya and Borneo. In Viet Nam they tried to impress upon the American command on how to deal with the Viet Cong guerillas, but the Americans would have none of it :( America relied on too much fire power, thus inflicting heavy civilian causalities and in turn empowering the Viet Cong. Also, too many men on attack, Australians learned it was best to go in small groups when dealing with insurgents, better concealment and less chance of discovery and ambush. :)
Great bunch of blokes!

I completely understand your desire to join up with the Aussies.

ReplyDeleteIn general, if there was anything wrong that could be found to do, the Americans in Vietnam would find it.
