Many art historians dispute the title of Dying Slave usually given to this not quite finished work by Michelangelo, saying he is actually asleep or in a dreamlike state. Originally intended as a component of a tomb Michelangelo was working on for Pope Julius II, it was left over when the artist had difficulty getting paid for materials and put it aside for the Sistine Chapel frescoes.
