Our last image shows that Michelanglo's work continues to inspire artists 500 year later. A few years ago the Getty Museum in Los Angeles built a special show around the original drawing at right. Contemporary artist Sutton Betti was inspired by it to make the relief sculpture at left.
Thanks for this series, very thoughtfully curated-Dee Exx

DeleteI agree with the above comment. And it's darn fine that you didn't use the terms "gay" or "homosexual" for any of the above because first it's not necessary, second, nude images of men are not gay or homosexual, and last, labels are not needed.
ReplyDeleteTBH, modern social constructs of homosexuality (the term itself a medicalization of sex between men) are relatively novel. Even in the 50s and 60s, many of the physique models 1) preferred women, and 2) were not above getting a blowjob from a guy, especially if he paid.
DeleteIt gets even more explicit cross-culturally. Where I grew up, in a largely native community, mutual masturbation, frot, and docking were pretty much the norm for boys, oral was spoken of in hushed tones, and anal...if you were a bottom, people just assumed you were trans. But boys mostly still preferred girls; it was just understood that Good Girls Don't™️.
Human sexuality is so complicated that it doesn't necessarily fit the categorization that society tries to impose.
DeleteAmen to all!
