Captain John Smith


Lincoln Kirstein commissioned this painting of the lead male dancer and his costume for the 1936 ballet Pocahontas.  The artist was Karl Free, and even at that early date, critics complained of how the Native Americans were depicted as "cigar store Indians."  Too bad more male ballet dancers don't look like the guy in this picture, though.  I'd probably go more often if they did.
