Richard Avedon (1923-2004) was one of the foremost photographers of his generation, and it's taken me far too long to give him a series. He was friends with James Baldwin in his Brooklyn high school, so his association with the avante garde goes way back. Initially best known as a fashion photographer, he eventually went on to do some cutting edge work, including nudes. We start the set with an image from a 1970 special gallery show that featured huge mural size photos of Andy Warhol's crew, among other subjects. The show has been repeated at the Metropolitan Museum. Not shabby.
It's not surprising that Warhol's crew posed naked.
ReplyDeleteNot at all. Kind of perfect. And showing their clothes there was perfect also.
DeleteAmazing photographer. Impressive series. Really captures something’s.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteThose hair style are back! Love 'em.
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother always said, "Wait long enought, and almost anything will come back in style."
DeleteHa, so true.
DeleteI wish I had seen Avedon 100 last year in NYC. I love his work, there is an elegance and mystery about it. Especially in the B/W photos, the contrasts bring out the image and make really them pop. The fact that he insisted on diversity and inclusivity when it wasn't readily acceptable in those days says a lot about the man. Wonderful set Jerry!
ReplyDelete...... really make them pop. Lol.
DeleteGlad you enjoyed the series, Pat!
